Description: The tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and TNF receptor (TNFR) gene superfamilies regulate numerous biological functions including cell proliferation, differentiation, and survival through regulating the activation of the transcription factor NF-kB and various mitogen-activated protein kinases. Nerve growth factor receptor (NGFR) was one of the earliest characterized members of this family. Also known as the low-affinity receptor p75NTR, this receptor is involved in several diverse functions such as apoptosis, neurite outgrowth during development, and myelination. Its ligands include NGF, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), NT3, and NT4. Description: Ankyrin (ANK) repeats mediate protein-protein interactions in diverse families of proteins. The number of ANK repeats in a protein can range from 2 to over 20. Description: Aldh5A1 is a member of the aldehyde dehydrogenase superfamily, a group of NAD(P)(+)-dependent enzymes that catalyze the oxidation of a wide spectrum of aliphatic and aromatic aldehydes. Aldehyde dehydrogenase enzymes are thought to play a major role in the detoxification of aldehydes generated by alcohol metabolism and lipid peroxidation. Aldh5A1 is a mitochondrial NAD(+)-dependent succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase. A deficiency of this enzyme, known as 4-hydroxybutyricaciduria, results in a disorder of the neurotransmitter 4-aminobutyric acid (GABA).
