Proteins encoded by the complexin/synaphin gene family are cytosolic proteins that function in synaptic vesicle exocytosis. These proteins bind syntaxin, part of the SNAP receptor. The protein product of this gene binds to the SNAP receptor complex and disrupts it, allowing transmitter release. Two transcript variants encoding the same protein have been found for this gene. Sequence analysis determined that the rat Cplx1 and Cplx2 genes encode 134-amino acid, highly charged proteins that share 84% amino acid identity. Asp, glu, lys, and arg account for 44 to 47% of the complexin protein residues. The amino acid sequences, but not the nucleotide sequences, of mouse, rat, and human CPLX2 are 100% identical.
