Guanine is one of the four main nucleobases found in the nucleic acids DNA and RNA. Guanine is a purine derivative.
Guanine is used as an additive to various products (e.g., shampoos), where it provides a pearly iridescent effect. It is also used in metallic paints and simulated pearls and plastics. It provides shimmering luster to eye shadow and nail polish.
Soluble in 0.1 N HCl (50 mg/mL - clear, colorless solution), 1 M Sodium hydroxide (50 mg/mL - clear to slightly hazy light yellow solution). Freely soluble in ammonia water, aqueous KOH solutions, dilute acids; sparingly soluble in alcohol, ether. Almost insoluble in water.
